Highly loaded tribological contacts such as those in gears, bearings, seals etc. are commonly lubricated to reduce friction and wear. To get in insight of the exact mechanisms which determine the behaviour in the contact region, elastohydrodynamic (EHL) simulations using finite elements are an appropriate instrument. However, when the consideration of surface roughness is desired, it brings about some technical problems such as a significant increase in simulation time. This seminar talk tries to present a heterogeneous multiscale method as an approach to solve this problem. The first part is a description of the model and the simulation procedure. The second part then compares it’s results with common EHL simulations. It concludes with a comparison of the performance in the meaning of simulation time.
